Interior Finishes

Custom cabinetry and finish carpentry, from full built-in wall units to baseboard, casing and crown. Measured, built and fitted on site, so every door lines up and every joint closes tight.

Built for the room it is in

Interior finishes are the woodwork that makes a room feel complete: custom cabinets and built-in wall units, pantry walls, office and studio built-ins, mudroom benches and storage, and the trim that ties it together, from baseboard and casing to crown moulding and panelling.

It is for homeowners finishing a basement or renovation, and for anyone who wants storage that fits the room instead of furniture pushed against a wall. Most rooms are not square, floors are not level and walls are not plumb, especially in older houses. Built-ins and trim that ignore that end up with gaps, uneven reveals and doors that do not close quite right.

So we measure the actual room, build to it, and fit everything on site. Scribed edges close up to uneven walls, shelves and doors are set level, and trim joints are cut and fitted tight. It is the last stage of a renovation, and the one you look at every day.

How an interior job runs

Measured twice, fitted once.

01

Plan the space

We go through what you want to store and how you use the room, then settle the layout, door style, hardware and finish with you.

02

Measure the room

We measure the real room, including out-of-square corners, sloping floors and bulkheads, so the pieces are built to fit it.

03

Build and install

Cabinets and built-ins are built and set in place, levelled, fastened and scribed tight to the walls and ceiling.

04

Trim and hand over

Trim and finishing details go on last. We walk the work with you and back it with a written warranty.

The choices on a built-in

Four decisions shape how a built-in looks, lasts and costs.

Custom or stock

Custom is built to the room. Stock uses standard boxes fitted with fillers.

Custom for
Odd spaces, full walls and floor to ceiling storage
Trade-off
Costs more and takes longer to build

Painted or wood finish

Painted cabinets give a clean, uniform look. Stained or natural wood shows the grain.

Painted for
Bright rooms and classic shaker styles
Trade-off
Paint shows chips and needs touching up over the years

Open shelves or doors

Open shelving displays and is easy to reach. Doors hide clutter.

Open for
Books, display pieces and things you use every day
Trade-off
Open shelves gather dust and show everything on them

Simple or detailed trim

Plain modern trim versus profiled casing, crown and panelling.

Detailed for
Older homes and rooms where the trim is a feature
Trade-off
More pieces and joints, so more time to install and finish

What drives the price

Interior work is priced after a visit and written down before we start. Small jobs get a free visit. Larger ones carry a small consultation fee that comes off the final bill.

Interior Finishes in Oshawa

Oshawa's older homes rarely have square rooms or level floors, which is exactly where custom built-ins and scribed trim make the difference over stock pieces. Basements being finished as living space or rental units also need storage and trim that fit the room. The shop is in Oshawa, so we are close by for measuring and fitting.

Bowmanville

Interior Finishes in Bowmanville

Bowmanville's mix of 19th-century homes near downtown and newer builds around the edge of town calls for different finishing. Older houses often suit profiled casing, crown and panelling that match the period, while newer homes usually want clean built-ins and simple trim. We drive out from Oshawa for Bowmanville interior work of every size.

Interior finishes questions

What is the difference between custom and stock cabinets?

Stock cabinets come in fixed sizes, so they are fitted to a room with filler strips and gaps at the walls and ceiling. Custom cabinets and built-ins are sized to the room itself, so they run wall to wall and floor to ceiling, fit around windows and bulkheads, and use the awkward spaces stock boxes leave empty. Custom costs more, and the payoff is storage and a fit that looks like part of the house.

What does finish carpentry include?

The trim that finishes a room: baseboard, door and window casing, crown moulding, wainscoting and panelling, plus built-ins, shelving and benches. It is the last stage of a renovation and the part you see every day, so the joints, reveals and paint lines need to be tight.

Can you build a built-in around a TV or fireplace?

Yes. Wall units around a TV or fireplace are one of the most common built-ins. We plan the openings for the TV, wiring and speakers, and keep the required clearances from a fireplace, so the unit looks built in rather than added on.

How long does a built-in or trim job take?

Smaller jobs like a mudroom bench or a room of trim can take a few days. Full wall units and larger cabinetry take longer, because pieces are measured, built and finished before they are installed. We give you a schedule with the written price.

Do you do the painting too?

Tell us what you need when we quote. Built-ins and trim need filling, caulking and finishing to look right, and we will be clear in the written price about what is included and what is not.
