Masonry Contractor in Courtice

Recent work in Courtice
In a Courtice home we built a floor-to-ceiling natural stone fireplace wall, with a timber mantel, a gas insert and arched niches on either side. Stone is non-combustible, which makes it a natural surround for a fireplace, and laying it out dry first kept the colours and sizes even all the way to the ceiling.
We have also finished bathrooms in Courtice, including one with a large checkerboard tile floor, a freestanding tub and a glass shower, and another with a marble-look tiled shower.
Courtice is on the Oshawa border, so it is one of the closest areas to our shop.

Our main services in Courtice
Our three main masonry services, and how they apply to Courtice homes.
Masonry & Stonework
Stone fireplace surrounds and feature walls inside, and stone steps, walls, pillars and caps outside. Natural stone and veneer both work, and we will show you which suits the space.
Historic Restoration
Courtice grew up around older farmhouses and rural homes, some of which still stand. Their soft brick and lime mortar need matched material and a gentle approach.
Brickwork & Repointing
Repointing worn joints, replacing spalled brick, chimneys, and brick on additions, matched so the repair does not show.
Also in Courtice
Foundations & block work, turnkey foundations, patios and walkways, and interior finishes.
Building in Courtice
Courtice is a community in the Municipality of Clarington, on the east side of Oshawa. Most of it was built up in the last few decades, so much of the housing is newer subdivision homes with builder brick and stone, mixed with older farmhouses and rural properties around the edges.
Building permits for structural work in Courtice come from the Municipality of Clarington, and so do heritage approvals for any designated property. Like-for-like repairs, such as repointing or replacing damaged brick, usually need no permit.
Like the rest of Durham Region, Courtice goes through hard freeze and thaw every winter, with frost reaching more than a metre down. Footings below the frost line and compacted bases keep outdoor stone work level, and indoors, fireplace surrounds are built to the clearances in the insert's manual.

Courtice masonry questions
Who issues permits in Courtice?
Courtice is part of the Municipality of Clarington, so building permits and heritage approvals come from Clarington. New structural work, like a foundation, an addition or steps tied into a new porch, needs a building permit. Like-for-like repairs such as repointing usually do not.
Can you build a stone wall around a gas fireplace?
Yes. Natural stone and stone veneer are non-combustible, so they suit a gas insert. The insert's installation manual sets the clearances to the mantel and surround, and we build to those numbers. A timber mantel can sit on a stone surround as long as it respects them.
Natural stone or manufactured stone for a feature wall?
Natural thin veneer has colour all the way through and does not fade. Manufactured stone is lighter and costs less, but chips show grey. For a fireplace wall you look at every day, we usually suggest natural stone, and we will show you samples of both.
