Masonry Contractor in Whitby

Stonework, brick repair and repointing, and careful restoration on Whitby homes, from the newer streets in the north end to the older houses downtown and in Brooklin. Our shop is next door in Oshawa, and our own crew does the work.

Recent masonry in Whitby

At one Whitby home we rebuilt the front entrance in natural stone, with wide steps, a landing and a circular inlay at the top, laid on a base built so it stays level through the winter. On other Whitby jobs we have set new cap stones on walls and steps, so water runs off them instead of soaking into the wall below.

Our brick work in Whitby includes cutting a new opening into an existing brick wall and finishing it the way the house was built, with a brick header and a stone keystone, filling in around a window opening with brick toothed into the old wall so there is no seam, and laying brick around the base of a new addition so it ties into the house.

Every one of those jobs started the same way: looking at what the stone or brick would sit on, and fixing that first.

Our main services in Whitby

Our three main masonry services, and how they apply to Whitby homes.

Masonry & Stonework

Natural stone walls and veneer, front steps and landings, walkways, pillars and wall caps. Many Whitby homes have stone at the entrance, and a new set of steps or a re-faced front changes how the whole house reads from the street.

Historic Restoration

Older homes in downtown Whitby and Brooklin often have soft brick, lime mortar, brick arches and stone sills that need a gentler approach. We restore them with matched material and keep as much of the original as we can.

Brickwork & Repointing

Repointing worn joints, replacing spalled brick, filling in or cutting new openings, and brick on additions, matched so the repair does not show.

Building in Whitby

Whitby runs from the Lake Ontario shore at Port Whitby up through the downtown and the newer neighbourhoods to Brooklin in the north. The housing changes as you go: older brick and frame homes around downtown and Brooklin, and subdivisions from the last few decades in between. Each needs a slightly different approach to brick and stone.

Two parts of town are heritage conservation districts under the Ontario Heritage Act: the Werden's Plan neighbourhood downtown and downtown Brooklin. Designated properties there need a heritage permit from the Town before their heritage features change. Outside those districts, most masonry repairs need no permit, while new structural work does.

Like the rest of Durham Region, Whitby goes through hard freeze and thaw every winter, with frost reaching more than a metre down. That is what lifts steps, cracks walkways and pushes the face off wet brick. Footings below the frost line, compacted bases and mortar that suits the brick are what keep work level and sound here.

Whitby masonry questions

Do I need a heritage permit for masonry work in Whitby?

Only if your home is designated under the Ontario Heritage Act, either on its own or inside one of Whitby's two heritage conservation districts: the Werden's Plan neighbourhood in downtown Whitby and downtown Brooklin. In that case, changes to the heritage features, like replacing brick, stone or windows, need a heritage permit from the Town of Whitby first. The Town's heritage register shows whether your property is listed or designated.

Do I need a building permit for front steps or a brick repair in Whitby?

Like-for-like repairs, such as repointing or replacing damaged brick, usually do not need one. New structural work, like a new foundation, an addition, or steps tied into a new porch structure, usually does. Building permits in Whitby are issued by the Town of Whitby. If your job needs one, we tell you up front and build to the approved drawings.

Can you match the brick or stone on my Whitby home?

In most cases we get very close. Newer Whitby homes were usually built with builder brick and stone, and the same product or a close match is often still available. For older homes downtown and in Brooklin, we look for reclaimed brick and stone to match, and lay samples against the wall in daylight before ordering.

How far do you travel from Oshawa to Whitby?

Whitby is right next door. Our shop is in Oshawa, so most of Whitby, from the lakeshore up to Brooklin, is a short drive away, and we work there regularly.

What masonry work do you do in Whitby?

Natural stone walkways, steps and caps, brick repairs and repointing, brick on additions, new openings in brick walls finished to match, and careful work on older homes in the heritage districts. We also do foundations, hardscaping and interior finishes in Whitby.

Nearby:We also work in Oshawa, Courtice, Bowmanville and Toronto.
